About Sense Architects – Stroud Based Residential Architects

Sense Architects is a Gloucestershire-based architecture practice specialising in residential projects across the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and surrounding regions. We design extensions, renovations, barn conversions, listed property restorations, and new homes that combine creativity, sustainability, and sensitivity to place.

With over 20 years of experience in the construction industry, Phil began his journey at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff, before qualifying as an architect at the University of Central England, Birmingham in 2007. He initially joined Quattro Design Architects Ltd in Gloucester, where he gained extensive experience working on a variety of public sector projects. These included overseeing the construction of five new primary schools, multiple school refurbishments and extensions, community centres, libraries, and numerous NHS projects, such as a high-security mental health unit and various hospital and surgery refurbishments. He collaborated with key clients, including Gloucestershire County Council, Worcestershire County Council, and the NHS, learning how to maximize budgets while delivering optimal results.

In 2014, he transitioned to Millar Howard Workshop Ltd, where he honed his passion for a more creative and detail-oriented approach to architectural design. Over the next nine years, he contributed to numerous high-end projects, including private homes, residential extensions, wedding venues, a school library, and a museum. During this time, he also gained valuable experience working with listed buildings, undertaking the refurbishment of a Grade I listed manor house and the conversion of a Grade II* listed lodge and adjoining agricultural barn into a high end wedding venue.

In 2018, Sense Architects was established in response to growing demand from friends and family seeking architectural expertise for their own projects. What began as a part-time venture quickly evolved into a full-time practice in early 2023, and the business has continued to flourish ever since.
